Aripeka West News

“Here’s what’s happening in our neck of the woods”                  November 2011

A message from BJ…

I would like to welcome our Winter Guests, some old friends who are returning for another winter here at Aripeka West and some new friends who are spending their first winter with us.  I hope you all enjoy your stay.  We have planned events for the months ahead from Pot-Luck Dinners to Theme and Holiday Parties to Movie Nights to Game Nights for your enjoyment during your stay.  You will receive a Calendar of Events every month.  Please join in the fun!

On the job with Karl & Gail…

Time is flying by and soon the Holiday Season will be here.  We are looking forward to seeing your Holiday Displays throughout the park.  We are planning to decorate the entrance to the park and other public areas right after Thanksgiving.  We know that many things need to be done here at Aripeka West, many important things, but we want to take a little time to dress up for the holidays, we hope you enjoy the little diversion of our Holiday Display!

We look forward to seeing YOUR Holiday Displays, there will be a Holiday Decorating Contest in December, hope to see lots and lots of lights and more!

We will continue in our efforts to make repairs and upgrades all winter, our carpentry help has arrived and are hoping to transform some of our “Ugly Duckling” mobile homes into “Beautiful Swans”, but Rome wasn’t built in a day, as the saying goes, so it will take some time!

Tuesday Night at the Movies…

Movie Nights in November will be the 15th and 29th.  On the 15th, we will show “RV”.  Bob Munro (played by Robin Williams) and his dysfunctional family rent a RV for a road trip to the Colorado Rockies, where they ultimately have to contend with a bizarre community of campers.  You can see the Official Movie Trailer for RV at…

The movie for November 29th to be announced.  Movie Nights will be held on the screened porch in the RV Park.

Monday Night Football…

Beginning on November 14th  Monday nights will be Football Nights at Aripeka West. Watch the game in our screen room.  On the 14th it’s Vikings vs Packers, on the 21st it’s Chiefs vs Patriots and on the 28th it’s Giants vs Saints.  Come cheer for your favorite team!

Good Morning Aripeka West…

Beginning Wednesday November 2, 2011 and continuing through the end of March 2012, we will host “Good Morning Aripeka West” with Coffee, Orange Juice and an assortment breakfast rolls, muffins, bagels and occasionally donuts!  Additionally, a few times during the season, we will have real Wednesday Breakfast with traditional breakfast delights!  “Good Morning Aripeka West Coffee will begin at 9AM, please enjoy a “Cup of Joe” with us each week.

Veteran’s Day Hotdog Cook-Out

Join us in the RV Park for a Cook-Out at our new Campfire.  We will be roasting hotdog and marshmallows while enjoying the fire.  We will have chips and dip, sodas, ice tea and lemonade.  If you would like to bring a dish to share that would be great, but it is not necessary.  Maybe the weather will cooperate and we will have a nice cool fall evening by the fire, our 1st fire of the year and our 1st fire in our new fire ring.  The fun starts at 6 PM on 11/11/11!

Thanksgiving at Aripeka West…

On Saturday November 19th we will have our Thanksgiving Dinner.  The festivities will begin at 3 PM; we will have Turkey & Stuffing, Ham, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Corn, Green Bean Casserole and Pumpkin Pie.  If you would like to bring a dish to share that would be great, but as always, it is not necessary.  There will also be a Birthday Cake to wish a Happy Birthday to those born in November.  Hope to see everyone there to help us celebrate.

 B-I-N-G-O…

Please join us for Bingo on November 26th at 6 PM on the Pavilion in the RV Park.  We will have chips, candy bars and sodas for sale, profits from the sales will be added to the final jackpot of the night.  Bingo Cards will cost $1/card and there are three games on each card. This will be a fun night for all who play and you just might go home with a little extra cash!

Neighborhood Watch…

Our 1st Neighborhood Watch Meeting was a great success!  Attendance was great!  We are now in the process of gathering information from Aripeka West Residents who were not able to attend our meeting.  We have attached a map of the community with our residents listed to this Newsletter.  We will keep you posted as we progress though setting up Neighborhood Watch.  Thanks to Stephen & Kathy Bostick, Amanda & Steve McKay, Steve Cummings, Stan Forrest, Linda Risher, Crystal Tattersall and Nancy LaFlam for attending our 1st meeting and helping us get Aripeka West’s Neighborhood Watch off the ground.

Successful Fall Yard Sale…

On Saturday October 29th, we held our Fall Yard Sale, it was a great success and the weather was cooperative, well, at least after 9AM. All who participated went home with a little extra cash in their pockets and lots more room in their closets and storage sheds!  We are considering doing a Spring Yard Sale if we can get enough interest, stay tuned for details, we are thinking about late March or early April. Thanks to those who set up shop at our Fall Yard Sale!

Fun- Fun- Fun Halloween Spooktacular...

 A Little Humor…

The parrot that wouldn't shut up

Ray, an RV’er from Omaha, travels in his motor home with a talkative but foul-mouthed parrot. One day in a campground near Gila Bend, Ariz., the bird's swearing got to be too much. So Ray grabbed it by the throat and yelled "Stop it!" But only minutes later, the bird was swearing again.

The next day, the bird yelled so loudly that the couple next door in a big fifth wheel stopped by to demand its silence. Desperate, Ray locked the bird in a kitchen cabinet. But it didn't help: the bird kept right on swearing. The next day, the bird was even worse. So, as a last resort, Ray tossed it into his spacious Dometic freezer. After five minutes, all was quiet. Worried the bird might be freezing, Ray took it out. "I'm sorry," confessed the suddenly polite bird. "I promise to never swear again."

Ray was astonished. He couldn't understand the change in attitude.

"By the way," asked the parrot, "what did the chicken do?"

“Here’s what’s happening in our neck of the woods”                  October 2011

A message from BJ…
I wanted everyone to know that the Pasco County Sheriff is actively working on the case regarding my Peddle Boat.  The Peddle Boat has been located!  I will not be able to get it back until those responsible for the thief have been arrested and prosecuted.  The Sheriff’s Dept. has assured me that they are close to making an arrest.

On the job with Karl & Gail…
Okay, so it looks like we are on our own writing October’s Newsletter, I was sure hoping that someone would turn in a story to be published.  Remember, if you have something to add to next month’s Newsletter, please get it to us by the 20th.

This month we are working on the Screened Room in the RV Park.  We have painted it and are furnishing it for our future get-togethers.  We are also rebuilding the fireplace in the RV Park, this winter we plan to have parties by the fire.

In the Mobile Home Park, we are in the process of removing unsightly sheds, decks and other structures.  We hope you are noticing our efforts.  The process is slow moving since there are only three of us and lots of work to be done.  We are also going to work on the front entry to the park this month, we are planning to install a small waterfall and surround it with some nice landscaping.  This will be a nice “welcome” for all who live at Aripeka West as well as visitors to our park.

Taco Tuesday…
Tuesday October 4th at 6PM we will be enjoying Tacos on the pavilion.  We will have all the toppings for the ‘build your own Taco”, plus chips and dips, sodas and tea and a few other surprise offerings!  We will be singing Happy Birthday to those born in the month of October and enjoying a Birthday Cake in their honor.  Please plan to attend our fiesta; you may bring your own “authentic or not so authentic Mexican Dish” if you would like to share it, but as usual, a dish is not required and all residents of the park are welcome.

Neighborhood Watch…
Please make plans to attend our meeting on October 12th at 7PM.  This is an exploratory meeting to discover those who are interested in forming a Neighborhood Watch for Aripeka West.  Hope to see everyone there!

Sewer Smoke Testing…
We still do not have a date for the Sewer Smoke Test, we will update you as soon as we have a date for the test.  While this test is being performed, you will see “smoke” coming from the ground and even roofs vent, but remember this is “just a test” and the smoke is not “real smoke”. This test is to let us know where any repairs may be needed in the Sewer system.

Fall Yard Sale…
On Saturday October 8th, let’s get ready to have some fun and make a little money at the same time.  Get all that “stuff” you never use that just sits in a drawer, closet, shed or even on your counter in the way and turn it into CASH at our Yard Sale!  The Sale will be from 8AM till 1PM, we will advertise the sale and you will have plenty of customers.  We are hoping to have everyone participate in this sale.  Remember the more Families that participate, the BIGGER the Sale, the more interest our sale will generate among those looking for GOOD Yard Sales.  Nothing like a HUGE YARD SALE to keep them pouring in to see what you got!  Let’s try to create a “traffic jam” on Elmira Avenue for our Yard Sale!

Halloween Spooktacular...
Our Halloween Spooktacular Party will be on Thursday October 27th at 7PM.  There will be “finger foods” and soft drinks served.  This will be a Costume Party, please try to come up with something to scare us or even make us laugh, we would loved to have everyone in costume, but if costumes are just not your thing, you are still welcome and we will scare YOU or make YOU laugh or maybe a little of both.  We have our costumes and are ready to “party”!!  We will play a few games and hopefully take a few pictures to remember our Spooktacular Party!

Chili Cook-Off Update...
Due to the abundance of holiday’s and events in October, November and December, our Chili Cook-Off has been postponed. We will schedule it again after the 1st of the year.

Please Welcome…
Our new residents, Linda and Grant, they will be residing at Lot #54 in the Mobile Home Park, please give them a warm welcome.  They have been staying in the RV Park for the last month and have decided they like Aripeka West and want to make it “their home”.

In Sympathy…
Our hearts go out to Leslie Bunker, her twin sister Linda passed away in late August after a long illness.  Please remember Leslie and her family in your prayers.  Twins are very close, so this is especially hard for Leslie, her twin sister, gone too soon.  Leslie lives at Lot #135 in the Mobile Home Park.

Remembering Sadie…
Bob Long’s beautiful Sheepdog Sadie past away unexpectedly in mid September; she became suddenly ill and was rushed to the vet, but the vet was unable to save her.  Sadie was 12 years old and moved to Florida with Bob several years ago, she was his constant companion and he misses her.  Bob lives at Lot #175 in the Mobile Home Park.

A Little Humor…

Well, duh!

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is advising hikers, hunters, fishers, and golfers to take extra precautions and keep alert for alligators while in Osceola, Polk, Brevard and Orange Counties. They advise people to wear noise-producing devices; such as, little bells on their clothing, to alert, but not startle, the alligators unexpectedly.

They also advise the carrying of pepper spray in case of an encounter with an alligator. It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of alligator activity.

People should recognize the difference between small young alligator and large adult alligator droppings.

Young alligator droppings are smaller and contain fish bones and possibly bird feathers.

Adult alligators droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray.

Think about this one!

I want to die while asleep like my grandfather,

Not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.

Kids are smarter than you think!

A nursery school driver was delivering a van full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past.  Sitting in the front seat of the truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog’s duties.

‘They use him to keep crowds back,’ said Tommy.

‘No,’ said Billy, ‘he’s just for good luck.’

Peter brought the argument to a close. ‘They use the dogs, he said firmly, to find the fire hydrants….'

“Here’s what’s happening in our neck of the woods”                  September 2011

A message from BJ…

I am offering a reward for the return of my Peddle Boat.  If you have any information on my boat, please let me know.  I am glad to be home, it was good to see my children and grandchildren, but there is really no place like home.  I am looking forward to our Labor Day Cook-Out on Friday September 2nd and getting to talk with all of you again.  Hope to see everyone there!

On the job with Karl & Gail…           Aripeka West

We are working hard to get things looking good here at Aripeka West.  We hope you are enjoying our Newsletter and if anyone would like to write an article, just let us know.  We try to publish the Newsletter to be delivered the last week of the month, so if you can get your article to us by the 20th, it will give me time to put it in the next edition.  We are planning some fun events for the next couple of months, so stay tuned for details.  Remember to Visit our Facebook Page, Aripeka West MH & RV Park, also remember our blog www.AripekaWest.Blogspot.com for all the latest info!

Labor Day Celebration…

Friday September 2nd at 6PM we will say farewell to summer of 2011 at our Labor Day Celebration.  We will be grilling hotdogs and hamburgers on the pavilion.  We will have all the toppings for the burger and dogs, plus chips and dips, sodas and tea and a few other surprise offerings!  We will be singing Happy Birthday to those born in the month of September and enjoying a Birthday Cake in their honor.  Please plan to attend, you may bring a dish to share if you like, but it is not necessary, so don’t feel like you have to cook to attend!  Everyone is welcome!

Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty…

Cats, lots and lots of cats, here at Aripeka West.  It is “kitten season”, so many cats with kittens and yes, they are so cute, but please resist the urge to feed them.  Most of the cats here are “feral” and they really do know how to take care of themselves.  Without human involvement, these cats will do just fine, the will hunt for food and take refuge in the nearby woods.  They will avoid human contact unless they are being fed.  Once they are fed by humans, they become a nuisance, hanging around our homes looking for a handout.  Feral cats carry many diseases like feline leukemia, feline aids and worst of all rabies.  When the feral cats start living near our homes, they expose our pets to these diseases.  Feline leukemia and feline aids are deadly to our pet cats and we all know that rabies is deadly to all of our pets and to us too.  Please help us keep our pets healthy by not feeding the feral cats and inviting disease into our park.  Also, a message for pet owners please spay or neuter your pets and get their vaccinations to prevent them from getting sick.  It is very important to protect your dogs and cats with Heartworm Preventative medication.  Heartworms are transmitted to our pet by mosquitoes, if your pet develops heartworms; treatment is very expensive for you and very uncomfortable for your pet.  Heartworms are more common in dogs than cats, and although cats seem more resistant, if they do get heartworms it is almost always fatal.

Our state bird is flying…

The mosquito season is upon us, they are everywhere you want to be and many places you would never venture.  Since the rainy season has come to Aripeka, so have the mosquitoes.  The Pasco County Mosquito Control has been here several times in the past couple of months, but the mosquitoes are resisting being controlled.  I have contacted them again to see if they can step up the spraying here at Aripeka West, I am hoping they can to something for those with yards that directly border the wooded areas.  As long as the rains continue, the mosquitoes will breed in the low lying areas nearby, but let’s make sure that we are doing everything possible to prevent them from breeding in our yards by removing old tires, buckets and any other containers that can hold water from our yards.

Crime Watch…

We are interested in starting a Crime Watch Organization here at Aripeka West.  We are getting the details on how to start an organization and should have more info for you by next month.  If you are interested in joining our Crime Watch Team and helping to protect our community, please let us know.  The more “eyes” we have watching, the safer we and our homes will be.  Our Crime Watch Team will help the Sheriff’s Office by reporting suspicious active here at Aripeka West.  We all know that times are tough; we also know that drugs are prevalent and tough times and drugs will sometimes make people resort to crime.  Your “eyes” will keep Aripeka West a safe place to call home.

Like hiking...

We are considering adding hiking trails on the property, this will be a really big job, but well worth it if the trails are used.  The more the trails are used, the less maintenance they will require, so do you want to get some exercise, see some wildlife and enjoy the fresh air?  There are trails in the Weeki Wachee Preserve (entrance on Aripeka Road) that we have hiked many times, but it would be nice to hike right here in the Park.  What do you think?

Yard Sale coming soon…

We are planning a Yard Sale for October or late September, just waiting for a break from the heat.  Get ready to sell; this one will be a big one!

Chili Cook-Off Update...

Our 1st Annual Aripeka West Chili Cook-Off is coming in October.  Dig up that secret family recipe, call your Mom, your Aunt, your Dad, your Uncle, do whatever is necessary to get that recipe!  Several have contacted us already and said they are “in it to win it”, are you “in it to win it” too?
